Katsucon 2013 – page 3
People were angry at something, and it said “Jewish” right there on the sign, what do YOU think happened? This is me trying to rise above, as I am wont to do.
To explain the “gazebo” bit: if you look up any pictures from Katsucon (or any convention at the Gaylord) at least one out of three will be at this gazebo. It’s right there in the middle of the hotel lobby/atrium/biodome thing and VERY popular for photoshoots. However, it’s also not technically part of the area Katsucon books for the convention, meaning that other events CAN book it along with the adjacent conference rooms. This has happened before, but usually the other party is agreeable enough leave that edge of the balcony open for Katsucon people to use. After all, not ONLY is the gazebo a popular photo spot, but that area is also how you access the elevators for that side of the hotel.
…and you remember what I said about THIS year and being able to access elevators? Yeah, apparently Katsucon showed up and discovered our “neighbors” had the ENTIRE area roped off. People were not happy. Thankfully, Katsu staffers had managed to get the precious gazebo accessible by Saturday, so at least THAT turned out alright.
(Historical Notes: Just sayin’ I saw a lot of people who normally pat themselves on the back for being as progressive and sensitive and high-minded as possible busting out some SUPER racist jokes in the heat of the moment. Like, a LOT. Because conventions are a safe space, just as long as everyone’s in a good mood.)
“Oh boy, people are really gonna show their butts this weekend” was my immediate thought when I saw the event double booking upon arrival that year. I’m sad just how right I was about that.
I just love the fact that your opening statement could be taken in so many different ways where anime conventions are concerned.
