Ichibancon 2016 – page 8
PROOF THAT I HAVE NO ORIGINAL IDEAS.
See, both the Iron Chef Panel and Shoujo Rock Heaven were last minute replacements for other panels that canceled, last minute enough that the printed schedule couldn’t reflect the changes. And that’s why you should always keep an eye on the con’s online schedule! (Actually, I shouldn’t talk. My phone didn’t get along with whatever app Ichi was using for their schedule, so I had to use the print-out myself. Oh well.)
(Historical Notes: I always felt like the panels I was on at Ichi were less well attended than anywhere else, making me wonder all kinds of stuff about how out of touch I was with the younger generation and blah blah blah. After going back to Ichi in 2020, though, now I feel like it’s just panels in general that Kids These Days don’t care about. This definitely seems to be one of those cons that people only attend to stand around in the halls.)
If I recall right, we were replacing a Bleach fan panel of all things too. At least a few people did show up to enjoy the rock music though. But yeah, what I saw from the times I went to Ichi was that was easily the case with panels and it’s always hard to determine if it’s just the crowd isn’t interested or if the promotion of panels is done well enough to get people to check out the subject. I think I would get the standing in the halls at Ichi more though if the halls weren’t just a small loop around the hotel.
It would be interesting to attend a totally different con, with different programing aimed at a different age group, taking place at that same location and see how the attendance/people flow is or isn’t different in that setting.
