Conventional Wisdom

I’m already making this joke on the links I’m posting around for this comic, but it bears repeating: I AM LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO CLEARLY ESTABLISH THAT NOBODY IN THIS PAGE IS A DELIBERATE REFERENCE TO ANYBODY I ACTUALLY KNOW IN REAL LIFE.  I mean, in broad strokes it’s based on EVERYBODY I know, but I’m trying to specifically call out any real people.  It’s just a general observation that, for a community that loves to pat itself on the back over how friendly and welcoming it is, there is a LOT of people in the convention scene who hate each other.  Also, there’s quite a few callbacks to the various Fake Anime I’ve invented for ConCONcon in that first panel.  I’ll be really impressed if somebody out there can work out which pages from previous comics are being referenced here (especially since there’s at least one whole set of ConCONcon comics I haven’t gotten re-posted to the new site yet!)

Oh, and as an aside, readers from the greater Raleigh area may have already noticed that I’m trying to depict ConCONcon as happening at the Sheraton Imperial, where Animazement used to be.  Since that was where my convention-going began, it only seemed appropriate… though it IS a bit awkward since AZ moved out right before I even started this comic, let alone began using photos as backgrounds.  Since I never had a chance to take a thousand pictures of empty rooms, I’m having to work around the handful of stock/promotional images I can find online, and that’s pretty limiting.  I keep saying that one day I’m gonna book a night at the Sheraton specifically for the purpose of spending a whole day taking pictures of every single corner of the convention center, then just keep that backlog of background assets to use forever.  Alas, I’m almost certainly never going to have enough disposable income to justify paying for a hotel room for literally no purpose (and I’d kind of feel like a creeper trying to take pictures in a hotel I’m not really supposed to be in).

Also, look!  The ConCONcon logo appeared in the background!  That give me an excuse to remind you all that you can totally buy ConCONcon gear!  Go spend money!
