Animazement 2022 – page 7
First of all, I’m pretty sure there were no actual tornados touching down that evening. At least, I never heard about anything like that. Second, I actually wasn’t even in the convention center for MOST of this. It’d been raining off and on all day, so I’d darted out to the parking deck when it let up for a second and wound up stuck over there when the bottom fell out again. So, yeah, I spent a not insubstantial chunk of Friday afternoon sitting in my car, listening to Bubblegum Crisis music, watching the storm outside. And even when the rain seemed to have let up and I got back across the street, the convention center staff was still sending everybody down to the lower levels. And that’s the final thing: TECHNICALLY we weren’t being sent to the Dealer’s Room, but the big empty space next door. At least, they’d realized that was the less cramped and crowded option by the time I got there. The problem was, we’re all fidgety children who get bored too fast, and both the Dealer’s Room and Artist Alley were still connected to that open event space, so everybody wound up wandering over there anyway despite it being a million times more stuffy and clogged up.
Still, I shouldn’t really be joking about the Dealer’s Room flooding like this. I WAS at Otakon 2017, after all.
Finally, longtime readers might wonder why I did a Wizard of Oz gag in this page without including Yoink: The Mascot of Plagiarism anywhere. The real answer is that the whole first panel was a last minute idea that I slapped together entirely in editing, so I just never thought to draw her. HOWEVER, it’s also because Yoink’s already got a pretty sizable role in a later comic lined up, and I can’t afford to book these characters for multiple appearances. I tell you, their appearance fees are INSANE.
