Anime Weekend Atlanta 2014: September 26th – 28th
Alright, alright, before anyone says it, I’ll just acknowledge it right here: this is the same basic idea as the most recent Otakon cover, only not as good. The Atlanta skyline here is a stock photo instead of a drawing, and I didn’t even use a big enough photo so it’s all blocky. Alas, my explanation is the lamest one possible. I didn’t have time to do anything better. I had to crank this thing out in the middle of a HUGE pile of Far Out There pages, enough to cover my trips down to Atlanta this week AND up to DC for AUSA next week. And you know what’s REALLY sad? This is the GOOD version! I tried it once with a different photo, but it was just too bland so I started over. The final version may be too low res, but at least it’s got Peachtree Plaza and the Hyatt’s UFO dome. Those are some of my favorite parts of the skyline!
…and yes, I AM well aware that AWA isn’t in Downtown. Unfortunately, when someone says “iconic Atlanta skyline” to you, Cobb Parkway is rarely what they have in mind.
BUT SPEAKING OF WHICH, HOLY CRAP! I’M FINALLY HEADING DOWN TO AWA! HOW COOL IS THAT? And since this is a con I’ve never covered before, I’ll give the little introductory spiel. If you’re reading this during the con, I’m probably running around somewhere near you right now, so say hi! This is just the cover page, the actual AWA comics will hopefully be finished and online by Wednesday. I REALLY hope they’re finished by Wednesday, because I’ll be on the road to AUSA on Thursday. YAY DEADLINES!
(Historical Notes: I’ll hold off on the obvious comments about going to AWA and the whole time management issue until later pages, so instead I’ll just say I like this cover a lot better now than I did back then… mostly because I can now look back on it with the knowledge of how the NEXT cover page turned out. Also, I’d totally forgotten there was an alternate version of this cover, and it’s REALLY starting to confuse me how so many of the SmackJeeves postings contain links to images that were apparently hosted on SmackJeeves itself. I REALLY don’t think SmackJeeves offered image hosting! Where are these links coming from, Past Me?)
