YEAH I ACTUALLY DID IT. WHY WOULD YOU EVEN DOUBT THAT.
No, but seriously, even before I actually lived in DC, the prospect of going to visit the officially designated “important” parts seemed profoundly uninteresting. And you’d better believe that only got worse once I DID live there. Nobody who lives near any tourist attractions ever actually wants to do tourist stuff, because that’s where all those pesky tourists are. And even now, with that whole chapter of my live in the rear view, I still have little to no interest in doing the big monuments any time I’m back in town. If you ask me to be your tour guide around DC, all you’re ever gonna see are random dead malls and weirdly furnished Burger Kings and Sonny Bono Memorial Park and, well, The Exorcist Stairs.
Actually, the plan had been to do a lot more off-brand sight seeing than we did. The original itinerary had been to run around town Thursday once we’d finished checking in. But between registration taking so much longer than expected and just the sheer inconvenience of getting everything into our hotel, all we wound up having time to do Thursday was going to buy a new hair dryer. And while we made time to go do a BIT of wandering on Saturday morning, it wound up being way less by necessity, since you know, we still had a whole frickin’ convention to back to by lunch time.
