Otakon 2016: August 12th – 14th
Well, here it is, gang! Otakon’s last go ’round in Baltimore! Conventional Wisdom’s been covering Otakon at the BCC since 2008, so it’s gonna feel REALLY weird heading heading to the heart of DC after this. And more importantly, who’s gonna care about that neon 80s-ish version of the BCC that I did after this?
Well anyway, as always, I’m gonna TRY to get the comics up within a week of the con. In the mean time, keep an eye on my Twitter or Conventional Wisdom’s Facebook and tumblr for updates (or, if you’re reading this during the con itself, check them for random pics and other con weirdness!)
(Historical Notes: Longtime Otakon attendees will recognize a lot of callbacks to previous years in that stuff the mascots are rooting through. Man, remember back when anybody knew what a vuvuzela was? Anyway, I’m a bit surprised Past Me didn’t do more to get all sentimental over saying goodbye to the BCC in these comics. Like, there’s one or two bits, but I thought past me still cared about playing to the crowd a lot more than that. Then again, I did end up saving some of the best bits for Patreon comics, like me taking one last walk across the entirety of Otakon’s floor space. From the back corner of the Hilton, all the way through the BCC, across the skywalk and over to the Hyatt…which was actually the only time I’ve ever been in there. It felt like it should have taken a lot longer than it did.)
I was one of the die-hards who stayed in the lobby near the fountain with some others, long after it officially ended. The convention center staff weren’t in their usual hurry to shoo us all out, I think they felt like they didn’t want it to end that soon, either. Met some people I’ve stayed friends with, got a few last cosplay photos, and finally they told us they had to close. It still feels weird, not planning the trip up there.
