Katsucon 2011 – page 6
So, Todd Haberkorn hosted a panel called “Mystery Cinematic Theater 5600 Dubbed – Whether you like it or not” entirely to make fun of Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl. Not that it doesn’t deserve it, mind you. Even by the standards of the minds that brought you Tokyo Gore Police, this is a profoundly messed-up and offensive film… and I’m not even talking about the pervasive violence, either. (You know how, on occasion, an embarrassed anime fan has to explain to “normal people” that a Ganguro girl isn’t intended to be a person in blackface? Yeah… you can’t say that about this movie)
And the weird part it, we were STILL annoyed that they had to stop the panel before the movie was done!
(Historical Notes: On a very subjective, personal level, this feels like as much of a period piece as that Epic Meal Time comic. There was a brief stretch where I was SUPER into the various sub-genres of J-horror, and I really gobbled up all these exploitation revival films in particular. At least, I told myself that’s what they were trying to be. Looking back on most of them now, they come across more as fetish-filled Japanese versions of Sharknado.)
