Conventional Wisdom

I doubt there’s anyone who’d read a comic like Conventional Wisdom and not know who Light Yagami is, but there’s a disturbingly good chance that you might not recognize Botan from Yu Yu Hakusho if I didn’t say something about it here. See, I was watching the subbed version for the first time a few weeks ago and was struck by the fact that she referred to herself as a shinigami. If memory serves, the dub Westernized it to “Grim Reaper.” Of course, our generation will never be able to hear the word “Shinigami” without thinking “Hey, that’s not Ryuk!” and thus a comic was born.

Now, actually DRAWING this thing was a real chore. Obviously, I didn’t even try to render these characters in my usual chibi style. Obviously, the whole joke is that Botan (pseudo-mythological nature aside) totally doesn’t belong in the same universe as Light. Unfortunately, drawing them both as similar-looking chibis would have made them look too… comparable, so I went for the more authentic look. It turned out pretty well, but MAN Light’s hair is murder!!!

Oh, by the way: if you’re wondering where that “LOGO” merchandise I promised last week is, just be patient. I submitted the art to the DrunkDuck store, but it’s still waiting to be approved. I’ll slap some “Store” button or something on the site when it’s ready, so keep an eye out.

(Historical Notes: Hey, remember back in the days when stuff on the internet had to be manually approved by HUMAN BEING rather than just processed automatically by an algorithm?  Also, this is another comic I’d totally forgotten about.  Man, I did a LOT of pages like this before Patreon claimed them all and left the public site with nothing but journal comics.)
